Google has been offering Flight details and tracking
features on its Google Now app for a couple of years now, and on
Tuesday, the company announced that it will now also users to look for
flight tickets, find the best fare and select the ticket they want to
book from its new dedicated channel on Google called the Flight Search.
The service indexes both domestic as well as some international flights.
The Google Flight Search offers just about everything you
need while booking a ticket. You can select destinations, date of
departure, and select your favored airline. In addition, the search
engine also suggests you the best fare across different airlines for
your travel. Google says that much like most of its services, Flight
Search also learns from your habit. Which means that it will recognize
the places you often visit and offer you travel and fare alerts in
accordance with your past bookings.
“When you access Flight Search, you’ll immediately see the
price and duration of flights to several popular destinations you might
like to visit — based on your preferences and previous searches. If you
set your dates and tap to expand the map, you’ll instantly see live
prices for destinations around the world.”
The company has partnered with Goibibo.com, an online
travel aggregator that allows people to book flight tickets using its
website for Flight Search and is possibly getting all the data from it.
“Goibibo.com is the first OTA in India to partner with Google for
Flight Search. This is in line with our philosophy and core
differentiation of delivering the fastest booking experience to our
travelers,” said Ashish Kashyap, Founder and CEO of ibiboGroup
The homepage of the Flight Search, by default offers you
some of the best fares to travel across the world. While this service
will definitely help commuters and occasional travelers, the Flight
Search could hurt the business of several Online Travel Agents (OTAs).
Flight Search is easy to use, and Google’s dominance in the field and
its growing presence in the country give them an edge over their
competitors.
“Giving our guests access to our flights for bookings
through Flight Search will offer another convenient channel to shop for
and book flights via their preferred search engine. This is just one
more way we’re collaborating with Google on new and innovative
technologies,” said Gaurang Shetty, Senior Vice President Commercial,
Jet Airways.
Google first launched the Flight Search feature in United
States back in 2011. The company had bought the flight software ITA
(which is also used by several OTAs in the country) to offer
flight-related searches and queries.
