An Indian man who was remanded in the Dimapur prison for allegedly raping a student, was lynched by an angry mob which defied all odds to break into the facility to kidnap him.
Taking
justice into their own hands, the gang overpowered the security at the
Central Jail, grabbed the man, strip him naked, drag him four miles and beat him to death while a crowd stood by filming the violent mob action.
The
rape suspect who was later identified as a 35-year-old used car dealer,
had allegedly raped a student from a local women's college multiple
times last month and was arrested the next day and charged to court.
According to Indian Express, the suspect died while being dragged through the streets as people beat and pelted him with stones.
The
horrific attack on the man, who had not been convicted of rape, comes
amid rising anger over the high rate of sexual violence in the country.
India has been the bedrock of violent rape with many women murdered in the process.
In
December 2012, a student and her friend coming back from a movie, was
lured into a bus. The attackers beat her friend and took turns raping
the woman. They penetrated her with a rod, leaving severe internal
injuries that caused her death.
She died a fortnight later after suffering terrible injuries to her abdomen, genitals and intestines.
Her death prompted mass protests and led to speedier trials and tougher penalties for rape.
